MARSHA CANN
St. Louis native Marsha Cann is well known as an actress, poet, story-teller
and educator. Her work has been published in Wordwalkers, Frontlines
and the St. Louis Muse. Cann has often been seen on stage in productions
with the St. Louis Black Rep; her association with that group dates
back to the origins of the company when she was a theater major at
Washington University. For seven years, Cann lived in New York City,
where she began teaching creative writing and drama in after-school
programs in the public schools and performing poetry in showcase and
jazz venues. She has worked in education and performing arts in the
St. Louis area for more than 22 years.
ABOUT 40 CORNERS
This project is the brainchild of Artistic Director Marsha Cann, who
was inspired by the life and work of Jim McGinnis (who passed away
in 2009) and his organization, The Institute for Peace & Justice
(IPJ). Jim worked tirelessly for peace, justice and the rights of
all. It was his desire that young people would really understand and
embrace the words and work of Dr. Martin Luther King, thus the Young
Artists for Justice & and Peace was born. As a part of the 40-year
celebration of IPJ and in honor of Jim’s life, Marsha was inspired
to create "40 Corners: Claiming Corners for Peace." The
Young Artists for Justice & Peace will be bringing Dr. King's
message to the street, challenging the communities of the world, one
corner at a time, beginning with 40 Corners in St. Louis to "live
the dream."
ABOUT HOPE IN THE HOOD
Hope In The Hood tells the story of our neighborhoods through poetry,
improvisation, song, and dance. The material was generated through
a collaboration between Project Uplift’s Sankofa Arts Initiative
and Young Artists for Justice and Peace workshops. Participants were
encouraged to acknowledge the challenges of our neighborhoods, draw
on the wisdom of our elders, embrace the hope that exists within the
neighborhoods and themselves, and choose to make a difference.
ABOUT I'M THE ONLY BOY
"I'm The Only Boy" is a young pop music band performing
original compositions and familiar standards. Made up of three sisters
and one brother - Jhaere, Mekhi, Bianca and Gibraun Mitchell - this
band displays the vocal genetics that only siblings can (they are
the children of Neuka and Tracy Mitchell and the grandchildren of
the legendary Fontella Bass and Lester Bowie!)
The Nu-Art Series is a Not-for-Profit Arts Organization.
