The Nu-Art Series proudly presents The Kendrick Smith Trio
on Saturday, November 5, 2011, from 3 to 6 p.m. The performance is
part of our ongoing Jazz and the Visual Arts Series and takes place
at the Nu-Art Series' Metropolitan Gallery, 2936 Locust Street, St.
Louis MO 63103. Doors open at 2 p.m.; $10.00 admission, open seating.
Kendrick Smith Trio's sound can be best described as organic, straight
ahead, post-bop style jazz. The group has very unique style and variety
of players and personalities within the group.
Micah Walker, born in raised in St. Louis, MO, has
been interested in the drums since he was three years old, and has
been playing since the age of nine. He is now a sophomore at SIU-Edwardsville,
studying Jazz Performance. Additionally, Micah has been accepted into
Berklee College of Music in Boston, MA, and has also been awarded
a scholarship to Berklee. Micah has played with a number of notable
jazz musicians throughout his career, including renowned piano player
and professor Reggie Thomas, and guitar player and professor Rick
Hayden. He plans to one day become an entertainment lawyer.
Bryon Harrison of Alton, IL, has been playing piano
for twelve years now. He has a Bachelor's of Music in Jazz Performance
from SIU-Edwardsville. He is now pursuing a Master's in Accounting.
Bryon is also very passionate about playing at his church, Deliverance
Temple Complex C.O.G.I.C. , of Alton, IL. Bryon has played alongside
many prominent jazz musicians, including: tenor saxophone player Willie
Akins, Beyonce's drummer Kim Thompson, and piano player Reggie Thomas.
Kendrick Smith of East St. Louis, IL, has been playing
music for ten years, and playing saxophone for six. Kendrick studied
Jazz Performance at SIU-Edwardsville. He is very serious about his
playing at his church, Apostolic Faith Healing Temple, of Washington,
Park. Kendrick is very busy trying to establish a name for his group,
starting in St. Louis. Kendrick has played with many well-known jazz
musicians, including: trumpeter George Sams, saxophone player Greg
Osby, trumpet player Terrence Blanchard, and Tony Suggs, pianist for
the Count Basie Orchestra. Kendrick now studies very closely under
famous Hamiet Bluiett, baritone saxophonist from the World Saxophone
Quartet.
