The Drum Line II
at the Metropolitan Gallery
Saturday, November 19, 2011
The Nu-Art Series is proud to present The Drum Line II
- a performance by St. Louis percussionists Jerome "Scrooge"
Harris, Charles "Bobo" Shaw and
Gary Sykes, and also featuring Johnnie Johnson
and Eddie Brown - on Saturday, November 19, 2011,
from 3 to 6 p.m. The performance is part of our ongoing Jazz and the
Visual Arts Series.
This is the second annual Drum Line performance at the Metropolitan
Gallery. There are are several threads that bind Harris, Shaw and
Sykes. They are all from St. Louis, they all play the same instrument
and all started in the Drum & Bugle Corps. The African American
vets of foriegn wars, VFW Post #77, started two marching units in
the 1930's. The senior unit was named the Tom Powell Post and the
jumior unit was American Woodsman. These individuals are products
of that effort. The Corps also has a long list of alums, such as musicians
Clark Terry, Phillip Wilson, Oliver Lake and many more. These drummers
have worked with some of the best in American music and have been
recognized for their contributions to the St. Louis music scene.
The Nu-Art Series is a Not-for-Profit Arts Organization.
